Week 12

Here are the ads I produced this week at the Democrat:

I was also asked by Chris Counts to write a paragraph on my experience as an intern at the Tallahassee Democrat. Here is that paragraph:
During my time at the Tallahassee Democrat I was responsible for designing and proofing flash advertisements for the Democrat's web site. This included designing graphics (though many graphics were provided), creating animations, editing HTML, and some action script. I was also responsible for creating coupon and splash pages featuring static ads and/or printable coupons. The most important lesson I've taken away from my experience at the Tallahassee Democrat is that you often have to do things you don't like to please a client. The most important thing to remember in a creative position is that the client is always right, and that can be difficult to come to terms with. It is better to just accept that fact than struggle with it. As far as technical skills learned I would say that working with Flash regularly has made me much more familiar with the features of the software in addition to speeding up my production time. For future interns I would suggest giving them a wider variety of jobs to do.

Overall I feel that my time at the Tallahassee Democrat was very beneficial experience working with people, and very good practice working with Flash and Photoshop. Additionally, my personal computer at the Democrat was a, previously foreign to me, Apple Macintosh. For me, working on a Macintosh system has been a learning experience of itself, as I had spent the previous 23 years of my life working solely with Windows PCs. Being able to work with different operating systems is an important skill in the digital design and development fields, and will serve me well in my future.

Week 4

On Monday this week I continued work on the splash page for http://www.funseas.com. The page is still a work in progress, with a lot of design trial and error being done. I just can't seem to get happy with it. So I set it aside and finished some work for print advertising. I created a large banner for print which is to be used at fair tables for the Democrat. The file is very large, but it is a 33"x78" banner with three collages of the Democrat's different publications, but print and digital. The collages are categorized as, "News", "Sports", and "Information & Entertainment."

I also updated the ad for North Florida Women's Care with the changes that were commissioned.

On Wednesday I designed this flash ad:

and continued work on the banner ad for print advertising. Here is a reduced version of the ad:

which I continued work on today as well.

Additionally, today I put together two more flash ads, and finalized the splash page ad for www.funseas.com, which I am posted reduced as well.

That's all for this week.

Week 3

Like last week, this week I spent most of my time designing flash ads for clients. I expect this will be pretty common. Here are my ad designs for this week:

I also started working on a splash page for Holiday Cruises & Tours of Tallahassee. More on that next week.

More to come.

Week 1

Today is the end of my first week working at the Tallahassee Democrat. My first couple of days were slow. On Monday I got acquainted with my workspace and coworkers. I spent several hours critiquing Tallahassee.com and made note of any usability issues I noticed. I also surveyed Tallahassee.com's Facebook page, and noticed that it does not come up when the user searches for "Tallahassee Democrat," which is a keyword I feel they need to establish within Facebook.

It took a few days to get a computer and the proper software. Once I had it I began recreating flash ads from Tallahassee.com as an assignment to demonstrate my current skill level with Adobe Flash.

I also got started on creating an original print ad for the Democrat to feature in the Seven Days of Opening Nights booklet this year, as well as a large print banner. More on those next week.
